In a double-blind clinical trial, 90 patients with high cholesterol were randomized to receive one of three treatments: 1) 800mg phytosterols, 2) standardized red yeast rice, or 3) a combination of both 1 and 2. After eight weeks of treatment the group given red yeast rice had significant reductions in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and apolipoprotein B (an LDL cholesterol molecule most associated with “bad cholesterol”). Group 3 had similar results, but group 1, given only the phytosterols, showed no significant changes. Red yeast rice was observed to have positive cholesterol-lowering actions in patients with high cholesterol, but even more so when combined with phytosterols.
Two of the pigments found in red yeast rice, monascin and ankalflavin, were tested in an animal study of high cholesterol. Hamsters were fed a high cholesterol diet for six weeks before treatment. Monaskin and ankaflavin administration resulted in a similar cholesterol-lowering activity compared to monacolin K. Total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels were all significantly decreased after treatment. Additionally ankaflavin was shown to help prevent fatty liver and the accumulation of lipid plaque in the heart aorta.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 52 doctors and their spouses, who had elevated cholesterol levels, were randomized to receive a red yeast rice extract for eight weeks. Baseline and post-treatment blood work was measured and researchers reported that treatment with red yeast rice led to decreased LDL and total cholesterol levels. These changes were significantly greater than in those given placebo.
